Irish Road Safety Week

'Irish Road Safety Week' runs from today until Sunday 17th October.  The Road Safety Authority has announced the following range of activities for the week:

  • 'The Check it Fits Roadshow will visit Cork, Ennis, Castlebar, Carrick-on-Shannon and Letterkenny from Saturday 9th October to Wednesday 13th October', including offering drivers 'a free 5 point ‘health check’ for their car including tyres, brakes, shocks, lights/levels and wipers'.
  • ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards on October 13th in Dublin Castle which honour the efforts of individuals and groups to promote road safety at national and community level'.
  • Beep Beep Day! road safety awareness will take place in almost 1,400 pre schools throughout the country this week, with children aged 5 and under practicing 'basic road safety messages with the Simon and Friends road safety storybooks, songs, games and activities. Information regarding child safety in cars is also being distributed to parents.
  • ‘European Night Without Accident’ will take place in Galway, Carlow, Donegal, Kildare, Mayo, Waterford and Meath on Saturday 16th October. This will be the fourth year that Ireland will participate in this initiative which is happening in 27 European countries in 2010. The initiative is run by young adult volunteers who encourage groups of youngsters entering night-clubs to identify a ‘designated driver’ for the night.'

Whilst the reduction in year on year deaths from 2009 to 2010 is encouraging, five people have lost their lives over the last three days in separate collisions in Cavan, Dublin. Kilkenny, Offaly and Sligo.

To mark Road Safety Week, TTRSA are presenting a paper on the lessons to be learnt from road safety audits and improving design at RoadExpo in Dublin on Wednesday 14th October 2010.
